Yorkshire Terrier Scam

> Yorkshire Terrier — westie @ 5:44 pm

BEWARE!

There is a scam email going around with the subject line  ”GORGEOUS YORKSHIRE TERRIER FOR FREE GRAB HER NOW!!!” often with a photo of a cute little Yorkie.

DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL – it is a scam – now known as the Nigerian “free puppy” scam. Far from being ‘free’, the missionary who is giving the puppy away asks for around $500 for fees……

Could your Westie be a Star?

> Westie — westie @ 9:33 pm

The New Victoria Theatre in Woking is holding a competition to find a West Highland Terrier to dog in Tintin.

The dog will be playing Snowy, Tintin’s faithful companion, and as well as looking like the West Highland terrier, it needs to be lovable, faithful, obedient and, of course, photogenic.

I don’t think my Westie would be able to do this, he’s far too naughty! Monty would probably run off into the audience in search of chocolate!

Does my West Highland White know He’s a Westie?

> Westie — westie @ 3:19 pm

Does my Westie, Monty, recognise his own breed? Are they all distantly related cousins that have a ‘family smell’?

sleepy_monty1.jpg

Monty, my Westie

Whenever we’re in the park he seems to get very excited and playful if he meets another West Highland White terrier. Much more so than when he meets any other breed of dog.

Does your westie do the same? Or is it just Monty?

Do other dog breeds seem to recognise their own type too?

I’ve never read about it anywhere…. so let me know!

Is a Yorkshire Terrier the latest celebrity must-have?

> Yorkshire Terrier — westie @ 3:57 pm

Is the cute little Yorkshire Terrier the latest celebrity must-have accessory?

Well, according to a recent news article, no celebrity worth their salt would be seen without a cute little Yorkshire terrier or two.

Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham), Tara Reid and Michelle Rodriguez have all been pictured with their lastest handbag-sized accessory, their Yorkie.

But its not just the girls…. Ryan Thomas, Orlando Bloom and Mr Grumpy himself – Simon Cowell all have Yorkies too!

No wonder they’re a hit all round – their loveable, cheeky terrier personality makes a great pet to have for company. Their little size makes them easy to carry and require very little exercise. And their long coat is perfect for brushing and styling and dressing up.

But at the end of the day, cute or not cute, Yorkies are DOGS not fashion accessories!

Bull Terriers Banned

> Terrier Dogs — westie @ 8:02 am

I recently read that:-

Dublin City Council has recently banned 11 breeds of dog (including Rottweilers, Bull Terriers and German Shepherds) from all their properties, including houses, flats and estates. Existing tenants are being given a chance to rehome their animals, but if alternative accommodation can’t be found, then the dogs will be destroyed.

It also seems likely that these breeds will be banned from public parks – which means dog owners living in private accommodation will also be affected.

Even the President had a Terrier

> Scottish Terrier — westie @ 2:22 pm

An exhibition unveiled last week at the White House Visitor Center shows a variety of White House animals-in-residence.

The one I like the look of is Fala. A Scottish Terrier owned by Franklin D. Roosevelt.

fala.jpg

Roosevelt’s Scottish terrier named Fala has gone down in history as one of the most beloved White House pets. “Roosevelt spoiled him and took him everywhere. He would sit in on meetings with Winston Churchill,” Schank said. As part of the war effort in 1942, it was announced that Fala had given up his rubber bones to promote scrap collection.

The terrier attended Roosevelt’s funeral in 1945. He never really adjusted to the loss of his master. When Fala died in 1952, and was buried in the Rose Garden, next to the sun dial, near his master.

Fala is probably the only president pet to be memorialized with a statue. A statue of Fala stands next to one of his master at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington D.C.

Scottish Terrier Warns of Seizures

> Scottish Terrier — westie @ 8:11 am

Scottish Terrier, Bonnie, has become Marie Richard’s guardian angel. She runs up and gives a low-pitched whimper, Marie knows a seizure is on its way.

A few seconds later, the convulsions begin. Marie’s body tenses and an epileptic seizure begins. Bonnie, her Scottish Terrier, presses her squat body against Marie’s until the tremors pass. Afterward, the dog gives a cautious nuzzle or lick, staying nearby just in case.

“It’s hard to explain,” Marie said. “It’s just really amazing.”

Scientific studies indicate some dogs can pick up on imperceptible shifts in body signals and possibly chemical odors put out by people before they experience seizures. Dog-training programs nationwide spend years teaching canines to predict and respond to serious episodes.

Some dogs can be trained to assist people with disabilities and disorders such as epilepsy and advanced diabetes. They learn basic commands, such as sitting and heeling, before moving on to assistance commands that involve pulling and pushing objects and alerting others. The training process lasts at least two years and includes a three-week orientation with the prospective recipient.

If a dog, trained or untrained, can alert someone before the event, they are more likely to sit down and prepare themselves for the oncoming seizure, move to a place of safety, and avoid injuries associated with seizures.

Marie marvels at the coincidence that Bonnie came into her life soon after she began getting seizures as the result of a bad fall. She’s grateful to have the dog by her side.

“Someone touching you and being with you is probably the most compelling thing you can have,” she said, as she scratched an appreciative Bonnie on the scruff of the neck. “She’s kind of like my little guardian angel.”

In the two years she and her husband have had Bonnie, Marie has come to recognize the terrier’s uncanny ability to predict convulsions and stay with her until the danger has passed. The dog has never been trained, and the Maria has no idea how she does what she does.

But thank goodness she does!
